Farmington Historic District Commission (FHDC) · 5 p.m. ET

  1. Farmington Parish Home Can Replace Its Woodpecked Siding

The St. James Episcopal parish home on Diamond Glen Road can trade its woodpecker-damaged wood clapboards for composite siding, as long as the boards are the narrower kind. The vote was Sept. 15.

  2. Farmington Saltbox Can Raise Its Roof to Fight Ice Dams

Working from outside spares the house's finished second floor and attic, the architect said, and no one voted against it.

  3. Historic Commission Lets 7 Church Street Skip Its Fence

The Farmington Historic District Commission approved a picket fence at 7 Church Street on May 19 and called it the last exterior detail on a house it had reviewed in stages since March 2025. On July 21 the owners said they would rather skip the fence and plant shrubs instead. That change came in as a planner's report, not an application, so there was no hearing, no vote, and no new certificate.

  4. Historic Commission Approves an Oil Tank Already Installed

The new oil tank behind 772 Farmington Avenue was installed, the bollards reset, and the screening panel built and painted before the Farmington Historic District Commission ever voted on it. On July 21 the commission approved the work as presented, in under nine minutes, without a question about it. The owner apologized twice for the order of operations, and then made the only case for the work's appropriateness himself.

  5. Farmington Seats a Committee for $30M–$35M Fire Station Plan

Farmington's newly seated Fire Station Building Committee held its first meeting Friday, taking control of a Town Council-scoped plan to build two new fire stations and renovate the historic Village firehouse for a total of $30 million to $35 million. The catch: none of it happens without a town referendum the committee is aiming to put on a 2027 ballot.

  6. Farmington Historic District Commission: What It Reviews

A plain-English guide to the Farmington Historic District Commission: what it reviews (exterior changes visible from a public way), what it leaves alone (paint color), and how the certificate-of-appropriateness process works for owners of the roughly 150 properties in the district.

  7. Farmington Historic Panel OKs Final 7 Church Street Details

The Farmington Historic District Commission approved the final exterior details — gutters and a cedar fence — for the new home at 7 Church Street, ending a staged review that began in March 2025. Chair Jay Bombara also walked a visiting group of Farmington High School students through how the commission works.

  8. Unionville Historic Commission Sets Five Priorities for 2026

Nine months after a wave of departures left the Unionville Historic District and Properties Commission with three empty seats, two alternate seats remain vacant. The Commission held its first official 2026 meeting on Thursday, May 7 — five months after its last session — and welcomed Town Council member Bill Beckert as its new town liaison. Chair Lisa Johnson set five priorities for the year ahead: recruitment of new property owners (the Vibberts at 126 Main Street are first), public education sessions, commissioner training, new-member onboarding, and a fall walking tour timed to the Cobblestone Church's 100th anniversary.

  9. Farmington HDC Approves Colton Street Door, Elects Officers

The Commission’s work Tuesday night was procedural, precise, and refreshingly drama-free. In Farmington, that counts as a feature, not a bug.

  10. Unionville HDC Advances Oral Histories, Elects Officers

The Unionville Historic District and Properties Commission approved three months of minutes, elected officers, and advanced its oral histories project during a brief December 4 meeting.

  11. Farmington HDC Rejects Steel Garage Doors on Mountain Road

The Farmington HDC navigates the nuances of vinyl cladding, steel doors, and hewn crosses. From 14 Mountain Road to the crumbling silo at the Tint Barn, preservation remains a detailed art.

  12. Unionville HDC Advances Oral History; Stone Church Honored

Unionville’s HDC met unofficially on November 6 to advance an oral-history effort and to celebrate the unveiling of a state plaque for the 1926 Stone Church, with a national register nomination now under review.

  13. Farmington HDC Approves Church Sign, Debates Memorial Cross

Historic District Commission Juggles Church Signs, Windows, and a Wandering Cross A wooden memorial cross needs a home. A church signpost leans to one side. And 41 windows wait for replacement. Welcome to the October 21, 2025 meeting of Farmington’s Historic District Commission, where four members tackled five applications after Cliff Max resigned and left…

  14. Farmington HDC OKs Brickyard Walk Sign, 93 Main Solar

Farmington’s HDC approved a Brickyard Walk hanging sign at 769 Farmington Ave and a 16 kW solar array at 93 Main. Staff confirmed the Winchell-Smith Dam removal and a Nov. 6 oral-histories training.

  15. Farmington HDC OKs Church Door, Solar; Dam Removal Sept. 15

Farmington HDC’s Aug. 19 special meeting approved a St. James door modification (steel, with SDLs), a rear-roof solar array at 5 Maple, and clarified 7 Church sidelights. Dam removal begins Sept. 15. ⚖️

  16. Farmington HDC OKs School Signs, Garage, LED Spotlights

Farmington Historic District Commission approves new signs for Noah Wallace School, tweaks a Church Street garage plan, and blesses LED spotlights for St. Patrick’s Church—all in one lively session.

  17. Unionville HDC Sets Plans in Motion for Oral History Project

Unionville’s HDC is advancing a collaborative oral history project, partnering with local institutions to preserve voices before they vanish.

  18. Farmington HDC Votes to Add Two Houses to Historic District

Farmington’s Historic District Commission votes to expand the historic district, but not before tackling a conflict of interest and a quiet reminder that old houses come with new rules.

  19. Farmington HDC Rejects Vinyl Windows, OKs Heat Pump

Heat pumps, lattice, and one very firm “no” to vinyl windows. Full report from Farmington’s HDC March 25 meeting. 🧱📏

  20. Farmington Historic Commission: Noise, Windows and a Sign

Miss Porter’s School wants new windows, St. Patrick’s needs a sign, and historic preservation meets frozen ground in Farmington’s latest Historic District Commission meeting. 🏛️❄️🔊

Unionville Historic Commission gets real on house preservation quirks, quirky neighbors, and keeping the neighborhood classy. Thanks to Farmington Storage for helping us save Unionville! 😂
