FARMINGTON — The Farmington Police Department published its press arrest log on Tuesday, on Wednesday and again on Thursday. All three were one page. All three were blank.
Together they cover 7 a.m. Monday through 7 a.m. Thursday without a gap. That is 72 consecutive hours in which the department recorded no arrests at all.
Each page carries the same three lines, and nothing underneath them:

That is the whole document. No name, no charge, no bond, no court date, no remarks column, because there is nothing to put in any of them. The form exists to hold arrests. For three days it held none, and the department printed it and posted it anyway, on schedule, the way it does every weekday.
Whether three days is unusual, this newspaper cannot tell you, and the reason is our own. The Mercury has been working this log for months and has kept only the pages with arrests on them. The blank ones were never filed, so there is nothing in our archive to measure this against. That is a hole in our record, not in the town's, and it is being corrected: from today the blank pages get kept like any other.
The last arrest on the books is still Sunday afternoon, a 20-year-old Burlington man stopped at Main Street and Bidwell Square and charged under the state's under-21 drunk driving statute, bond of $2,500. Since then, three pages, three dates, and nothing else at all.
Total arrests, Sept. 1 through Sept. 3: none. Not unknown. None.
